Study Poplandschaft NRW 2024

The PopBoard NRW publishes the results of the study “Poplandschaft NRW – Situation and Perspectives of the Music Industry“, which was commissioned by Goldmedia GmbH. The aim of the study is an up-to-date survey and presentation of the pop landscape in North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to companies, sales and employees, the focus is also on industry-specific key figures, a differentiated assessment of the current situation and possible funding and support measures


One of the key findings of the study is that the participants see NRW as a versatile pop location with a high proportion of regional acts, a variety of subcultures and a large number of concert venues. All levels of the value chain are represented in NRW, characterized by a strong independent structure. However, the displacement of clubs and affordable rehearsal spaces, a lack of infrastructure, including in the area of promotion, and a lack of a spirit of optimism are limiting the development potential. NRW needs to make greater use of and promote its potential and relevance as the second-largest music industry location in Germany and the country’s most densely populated club scene. The NRW pop music industry would therefore like to see closer networking of the creative industries, initiatives for greater visibility, the protection of pop cultural spaces and a strengthening of the training location, for example.
