New study results for NRW as a music industry location in 2024

The PopBoard NRW is publishing the results of its latest study on the situation and prospects of the music industry in NRW, which was commissioned by Goldmedia GmbH. The study examines key indicators such as turnover and employment figures in Germany’s most populous federal state and offers a differentiated analysis of the current pop landscape as well as suggestions for further strengthening the location.

One of the key findings of the study is that the participants see NRW as a versatile pop location with a high proportion of regional acts, a variety of subcultures and a large number of concert venues. All levels of the value chain are represented in NRW, characterized by a strong independent structure. However, the displacement of clubs and affordable rehearsal spaces, a lack of infrastructure, including in the area of promotion, and a lack of a spirit of optimism are limiting the development potential. NRW needs to make greater use of and promote its potential and relevance as the second-largest music industry location in Germany and the country’s most densely populated club scene. The NRW pop music industry would therefore like to see closer networking of the creative industries, initiatives for greater visibility, the protection of pop cultural spaces and a strengthening of the training location, for example.
